Dr. Werthman is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and Director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Vasectomy Reversal in Los Angeles, CA. He is also a past president of the Los Angeles Urologic Society and a former Chief of Urology at Century City Hospitals.
Sought out to author the chapter on male reproductive surgery in the textbook “Complications of Urologic Surgery” and editor of a textbook on male infertility for the series: “Infertility and Reproductive Medicine Clinics of North America,” Dr. Werthman is able to serve as an experienced advisor to both peers and patients interested in male infertility topics. His top success rates combined with minimum complications sets the standard for the urologic surgical world and that is why he was requested to share his insights and techniques in these medical textbooks.
A well-known, trusted male fertility expert and vasectomy reversal surgeon, Dr. Werthman is often featured as a men’s health authority in the mainstream media, having served as a resource in virtually every major U.S. news outlet including ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and ESPN. He was invited to join the expert team of reconstructive surgeons on ABC TV’s hit show “Extreme Makeover” and performed network television’s first vasectomy reversal.
Dr. Werthman is frequently called upon by doctor and patient audiences around the country as a lecturer on men’s health and fertility issues. Additionally, he is the only male fertility specialist on the advisory board for Conceive Magazine, a national lifestyle publication focused on health and fertility.
Dr. Werthman obtained his medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, achieving the distinction of class valedictorian as the top-ranked student in his class for all four years. During his schooling, Dr. Werthman won four academic scholarships and was awarded the Medical Staff Award for Highest Attainment on the National Boards medical examination. He completed his specialty residency and fellowship in urology at the University of California, Los Angeles and was subsequently bestowed a visiting fellowship in male infertility and microsurgery at The Baylor College in Houston, TX. He won the Proctor & Gamble Resident’s Essay First Prize Award for his research on gene therapy.
Insistent upon just about everyone calling him “Phil,” Dr. Werthman is an avid sports fan who played basketball in his undergraduate years at the State University of New York – Binghamton. He enjoys skiing and cycling, holds a black belt and practices traditional Shotokan Karate. An analyst of historical perspectives on military operations both domestic and abroad, Dr. Werthman obtained a Masters Degree in Military History from Norwich University and works closely with the military.
